The first Melodicas did in the 1950s by the Hohner company. The melody is essentially a reed organ which is powered by breathing and is small enough and light enough to be held by hand. Since the melody came out, other manufacturers also came up with their own versions of the melody. Some of these are Pianica Tokai, the Melodion Suzuki, Clavietta, the Yamaha Pianica the organomereurials Silvertone, and many more.
Holding and playing Melodicas
The melody can be a bit confusing to keep or play especially if it is the first time you come across the instrument. This is because it resembles a cross between a wind instrument and a piano. However, all you have to do is support the instrument with the thumb while putting four fingers in the belt. Remember to close your mouth securely around nozzle to ensure that no air leaks.
Breathing and technique are the two main things to focus on when playing the melodica. Simply breathing gently through the nozzle can instantly create a soft sound. To create a thicker sound or heavier, then you can use the same air used when whistling. Just remember not to fly heavily on the nozzle or it will ruin the alignment of the instrument.
Preserve and protect
Care and maintenance of Melodicas not complicated. Just make sure you keep the instrument in its case when not in use. The case is protected from dust, dirt, pets, moisture, and the child's curious hands.
The melody in popular music
The melody is actually a favored instrument of many famous musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Sufjan Stevens, Ben Folds, Belle and Sebastian, Joe Jackson, DJ Product, Heavenly Oceans, and more.
