Alternate ways to harness energy from sunlight?

I’m about to build a home energy source and was considering solar cells and fans (air), anyway. Solar cells are expensive and do not really generate much power. The area is about 30 cm2. I have seen that it is possible to construct cells lots, they generate very little electricity. So what I can use instead of solar cells (from sunlight or UV rays)? Is there any way to create cells most powerful solar at home instead of buying? How? Ps this is for a school project, so I need cheap and effective solutions. Thanks!

Probably you can easily build a solar heater yourself. A solar heater is simply a panel with water channels, or tubes that pass through solar concentrators (Parabolic mirrors or lenses) that capture and concentrate solar energy to heat water. Remember kill ants with a magnifying glass? This is the same concept. Solar heaters can generate electricity very efficiently if the water can become steam. You could use a steam turbine, if they have a (probably not). Or, you could build a small fan connected to a DC motor and a little cheap to run the fan for the steam and water vapor that comes at the end of the tube. This should easily generate enough electricity to power a small LED bulb or a few. To do this experiment needed at least a dozen plastic magnifying glasses and probably about 6 feet 1 / 8 “diameter copper tubing. copper tubing usually costs a few dollars per foot, and you can take advantage of inexpensive lenses for increase in most dollar or thrift stores. simplest way I can think about building this thing would be to take two flat plates and create an L-shaped platform long. Straighten the copper tubing and necessities to one of the boards. Here is a cross sectional view of what I mean Copper tube  Then screw the stems of the glasses increase for the right side of the bottom board, ensuring that the distance between the copper tube and the objective party of lens focal length of the maximum heat output. Increase  Then attach Lens water tank at the side of tube, point the device in the sun and see how hot it gets. Anyway, sounds like a fun project. Have fun and good luck.

What can we do as homeowners to increase the value of our property? We can make adjustments to almost anything around our property. What is a solar oven? It is an oven that uses the sun’s energy to cook, bake, steam or broil all types of food, from pies, bread, cakes and cookies to barbeque, roasting an 18 pound turkey or pot-roast. Anything that can be cooked or baked in a conventional oven can be cooked or baked by the power of the sun in a sun oven in the same amount of time, if it is a cloud-free day. Sun oven/cookers have been around since the 17th century, and are becoming increasing more popular now for several good reasons.

• Solar sun ovens use the free renewable energy of the sun.

• They produce zero pollution and reduce “global warming.”

• Food tastes better when cooked by the heat of sun.

• Sun ovens do not destroy the valuable vitamins and nutrients.

Sun ovens are being used in over 128 countries around the world and are a tremendous deterrent to greenhouse gases. According to the World Health Organization, half of the world’s population uses wood, charcoal, coal, grass, tree bark, dried animal dung or kerosene to cook their meals. As a consequence, we are losing approximately one acre per second of our forests around the world (WHO).

One large box-type sun oven with reflectors can cook 1,200 meals per day and by using the power of the sun, save 150 tons of wood per year, resulting in the reduction of 277 tons of CO2 gas emissions annually. WHO reports that the carbon emissions from one cooking fire equals that of one automobile. Millions of women and children die annually from breathing in the toxic smoke from cooking fires equivalent of three packs of cigarettes or more a day.

There are many different types of sun oven/cookers, ranging from DIY aluminum foil-covered cardboard boxes to a parabolic cooker made from a discarded satellite dish. The efficiency or effectiveness of a solar cooker/oven depends largely on the design and materials used. The best, most efficient solar ovens are the box type design that are well insulated and utilize a tempered glass door to protect the food and help hold in the heat. A well designed oven should reach 350-400 degrees F. within 25 minutes and hold a constant temperature throughout the cooking or baking process.

The large solar sun ovens are saving lives and our environment, and they are providing food for hospitals, schools, orphanages and even entire villages in South America, Africa and Asia. Several solar oven manufacturers contribute a portion of their annual sales profits to supply free ovens to thousands of families. Unfortunately, this is a daunting task which requires the concerted effort of many more people like you.

By purchasing a sun oven from one of these philanthropic companies, you not only contribute to decreasing the size of your own carbon footprint, but you are investing in the healthy future of a family in another developing country. Plus, you are protecting the environment, saving money, using free renewable energy, cooking healthy and having fun at the same time.

I’m near the end of one of the funniest books I have ever read. I would have waited to finish, but I didn’t want you to miss out on a single moment of the hilarity. For the laugh of a lifetime, you must rush out right now and buy “Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need A Green Revolution And How It Can Renew America ” by the New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman.

To give you a taste of the enjoyment that awaits you, I’ll share just one of the many, many knee slappers that you’ll find in the book.

Friedman shares an uproarious anecdote that he was told by Princeton engineering professor Robert Socolow and Princeton ecology professor Stephen Pacala. The two professors rival comedian “Professor” Irwin Corey in their ability to tell a joke.

Socolow and Pacala suggest 15 “wedges” that will be required to “conserve large amounts of energy and prevent CO2 emissions” (not prevent the emissions, mind you, just “conserve energy”). Here are four of the “wedges.” Read them and see if you can hold back the laughter (I couldn’t):

1. “Double fuel efficiency of two billion cars from 30 miles per gallon to 60 mpg.”

2. “Drive two billion cars only 5,000 miles per year rather than 10,000, at 30 miles per gallon.”

3. “Raise efficiency at 1,600 large coal-fired plants from 40 to 60 percent.”

4. “Replace 1,400 large coal-fired electric plants with natural-gas-powered facilities.”

I’d share the other eleven “wedges,” but I’m laughing so hard I can’t type.

I’m sure you’re asking, “What’s so funny?” The humor comes from the fact that our politicians will never pass anything remotely like the “wedges” proposed by Socolow and Pacala. Democrats and Republicans are barely functioning now. They will never agree to do something really hard like saving the planet. And, without systemic and committed change efforts, as Friedman makes abundantly clear, we are doomed. The joke, unfortunately, is on us.

With this in mind, I’d like to offer a “modest proposal” for saving the planet. My proposals have the advantage of being easy (they require no sacrifice and actually reward an increase in CO2 emissions) and guarantee the preservation of the planet.

In honor of Socolow and Pacolow, I’ll call these my “wedge” issues:

1. Require that every American purchase the heaviest SUV currently being manufactured. Purchasers will receive generous tax breaks. Tax breaks will be contingent upon the purchaser proving that the vehicle has been driven at least 25,000 miles during the calendar year. Those who cannot afford an SUV will receive one as part of an entitlement package that will include vouchers to purchase gasoline.

2. Require that all new home construction be limited to homes of at least 6,000 square feet. Homeowners will be able to deduct the entire cost of their mortgage from their taxes. The homeless will be provided with public housing such that every homeless person will have at least 6,000 feet of personal living space. Those currently owning homes of less than 6,000 square feet will be offered incentives to expand their living space.

3. Homeowners who insist on any type of insulation or who install solar panels or any other “conservation equipment” (or who currently have such equipment on their homes) will be required to pay a 10% income tax surcharge.

4. Monetary compensation will be offered for every mile driven to work. Compensation will be on a sliding scale. The farther the drive, the greater will be the compensation. The cost of this compensation will be paid by a corresponding increase in the fares paid by those who take public transportation to work.

5. Pollution controls will be immediately removed from all coal fired power plants. There will, of course, be no requirement for pollution controls on new plants.

6. The Environmental Protection Agency will be immediately abolished. Money formally spent on this agency will be used to create a new “Business Protection Agency” whose job it will be to find and eliminate regulations that hinder pollution as well as species eradication.

7. Homeowners and building owners will be required to leave all interior and exterior lighting on from just before sunset to just after sunrise. Fluorescent lighting and compact fluorescent bulbs will be replaced with lighting of the maximum wattage possible. Homeowners and building owners will be required to maintain an interior temperature of 85 degrees fahrenheit in winter and 70 degrees in summer.

8. Since Americans consume more energy per capita than any other people on earth, monetary rewards will be given for the birth of each American child. The cost of these rewards will be defrayed by a tax on childless individuals and couples as well as couples with fewer than three children.

I’m sure that, with a little of our great American ingenuity, we can come up with a lot more “earth saving” ideas (space limitations prevent me from mentioning the possibilities offered by hiring bounty hunters to hunt and eradicate species, the joys of deforestation and mountain top removal and, of course, the pleasure of ending recycling in favor of rewards to people who dump plastic bags into our lakes and streams).

But how, you may ask, will this save the earth? After all, each of these ideas will accelerate global warming and the accompanying death of the people on the earth.

Exactly! You’re finally getting the point. After all, since the “wedge” ideas proposed by Socolow and Pacow have a zero chance of being implemented, the only hope for the earth is to do all we can to speed our demise. Only when we are gone will the earth have even a moderate chance of reconstituting itself as a healthy, living environment.

So come on people. We can do it. Let our chant be:

One, two, three, four

We don’t want to breathe no more.

Five, six, seven eight

Do all you can to eradicate

Nine, ten and eleven

All polluting children go to heaven.

And God bless us everyone.

If you live anywhere except under a rock, you most likely know Lake Lanier in Georgia has been facing its worst drought since it was built in the early fifties. In 2007, the lake hit the record low of 1050.79, which was a little over twenty feet below full pool. Last year the media nationwide was all over the lake level. Pictures were on the news every day of boats stuck high and dry on the shore. A cemetery that was never moved became visible.

In 2008, the media has not covered the condition of the lake due to other important issues facing society. With the lack of media coverage, many believe the lake level has recovered and it is not an issue. This could not be further from the truth. As of early November, the lake level is down approximately 19 feet. Last year at the same time, the lake level was down approximately thirteen feet. If the rest of the year proves to be dry, the record low of last year may soon be broken. The one good note is that the lake level is not falling as fast as last year. No recycling in office buildings in New York?

It drives me crazy that I have to throw my empty bottles and cans in the trash in my workplace. I live in New York City, but raised with recycling as second nature. Why is it so difficult to recycle in this city? Many of my friends who working in the city announcing the same. Why not recycling options on the sides of the streets, garbage cans? I resorted to bringing my own bags for recycling and collection of cartons of bottles, etc. after work and recycle them myself. Who is in charge of this?
