Greenhouse gases have an exceptionally long lifespan in the atmosphere. David Archer, apparently, the foremost scientist (climatologist) address this question, why inserted the additional CO2 in the atmosphere over the past 200 years are expected to remain high, trapping heat, at least another 1,000 years. He is joined in this assessment by Susan Solomon of NOAA. This has far-reaching implications and frightening.
The heat is generally increasing from year to year during the past two decades. During the same period of two decades, scientists have continued to report a decline in the amount of ice on land and building heat continues to melt glaciers and ice caps at a rate faster than the annual snowfall can replace. Year after year, more heat – less ice and melt rate increases as it goes. What is that going to mean for us?
Since now we're pretty much guaranteed that the "more heat – less ice will continue. The thousand-year life of CO2 remain at current levels preventing any reduction in the warming trend. Each year there is less ice to melt the heat to rise so you should probably expect the rate of fusion to increase dramatically in the short term. An ice-free planet will become a reality much sooner than currently thought. The Arctic is expected to be ice free in summer within the next 3-5 years. How soon for Antarctica and Greenland? Who knows? So far, all predictions of scientific community as to "how long" before a certain portion of the stocks of ice completely melts, has been completely incorrect. His first predictions for the summer when Arctic ice would be gone was the next century – is now up to 3-5 years. "Heat more – less ice – 1000 years" may soon become the central focus of the whole climate change debate.
One of the things "more heat, less ice," means to some is that our current strategy, which requires universal "carbon footprint reduction" can not and will not produce any relief – even if we reduce our footprint carbon worldwide zero in the morning. Since heat more – less ice – 1,000 years ", a phenomenon already underway that will continue no matter what do, but the mechanical cleansing of CO2 from the atmosphere and kidnapping under the ground where it can no longer contribute to global warming. To avoid the consequences of climate change by simple modification of our future behavior vis-a-vis CO2 option is now completely expired.
Another thing "more heat — less ice – 1000 years "means that current estimates of the scientific community that the temperature will be achieved are largely useless because they have to take into account the effect that the absence of heat absorption expected from Ice takes on rising temperatures. At present, the overall heat is reduced dramatically because much of it is neutralized by the melting ice. Once the ice is gone, the temperature will be free to rise to levels that can not even estimate, since, in the past, land has always had plenty of ice.
When the result of an event that occurs over time becomes known and unavoidable, said to have come into play their "end." Most of us believe there is still plenty of time to head this off when in fact the door has already closed the possibility of staying away from climate change by simply changing our relationship with oil. Now, we must look to technology to our salvation and hope we are smart enough to "catch up" in this deadly game, so far, we've lost.
