Recently, the study of the Coachella Valley, which is in the low desert between Salton Sea and Riverside CA, we found that the use of excessive ground water is depleting the underground aquifers at an alarming rate. Why is this happening? Well, the Coachella Valley is home to 200 golf courses and the area has grown rapidly over decades. Although currently the property values were not affected as bad as other areas around this region, the Coachella Valley now faces another problem serious consequences not related to subprime loans.

Much of the area region has sunk 6.1 inches, with some areas that have sunk more than a foot. This has occurred in less than nine years since it was first noticed and began to keep accurate records. Another issue that was addressed is that the area is sinking reduce the volume available to the aquifer if it starts to fill back up again, although this is a minor consideration, was duly noted. What the region can do now?

Mandatory conservation seems to happen or at least a solid public relations program to secure citizens take this challenge seriously. More use of greywater should be used to water golf courses and gardens. In addition, some water should be diverted to the underground aquifer however, that water will be from the Colorado River and portions of which are shared by sectors such as San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson.
