Solar energy has long been a source of lower energy compared to mighty oil. With increasing oil prices and the conflicts occur in oil countries, perhaps the question should be reviewed.

Flip the coin, oil has some serious advantages over solar. We have developed a technology effective at converting the oil in power. The cost of converting industry, vehicles and such to solar or other energy source would be huge. Oil also has the advantage of being easier to use in a wide variety of applications such as vehicles. You just can not move a vehicle solar energy, not on a practical level. Finally, it is easier to use oil to power high-energy platforms, as electricity for the city of New York.
For the needs of large-scale energy, oil is still a superior choice to solar as energy source. The technology simply does not exist to provide solar energy solutions for vehicles, national systems of grid and so on. Advances in solar technology, however, may change this in the very near future. Technologies such as quantum dots, microscopic solar panels which in essence could exist in the paint in your home, you can make oil a thing of the past.
For now, oil remains the cornerstone on that our energy needs sit. In the next 5, 10 or 20 years, however, new technological applications may change this. Do not believe me? Then consider the fact oil companies such as Chevron are investing heavily in solar companies.
