Solar photovoltaic panels generate electricity using a phenomenon discovered in 1839 by a young scientist named Edmund Becquerel. This phenomenon, called the photovoltaic effect occurs when certain materials produce electric currents, as they are exposed to light.
A photovoltaic solar panel is essentially a large number of semiconductor PN junctions. One half of each bond is electron deficient, electron-rich half. The photovoltaic cell is designed to create an electric field across the junction between the two halves of the crystal, and electrons flow from the rich side of the poor half. A potential barrier between the P and N-type glass sides and this prevents further electrons travel through the junction until the sun visits the solar cell and releases electrons with an energy enough to overcome the barrier.
High school physics taught us that sunlight is composed of packets of energy called photons. Each photon carrying a large amount of energy corresponding to the wavelength of light. When a photon hits a solar photovoltaic panel that can do one of three things. You can go directly through, reflected, or be absorbed. If a photon is absorbed, its energy is absorbed by an electron in an atom of the solar cell that allows you to escape from his position normal across the junction and fill a gap. Here, electrons flow through a load (for example, charging a battery, the lighting of a lamp, or turn on an engine), and complete the circuit to recombine with the holes they left behind. In doing so, the energy of sunlight has been mined and used with an efficiency of around 5-15%. This process can be repeated again and again during the decades of the lifespan of solar cells.
